Sometimes it is the small things that bring such joy in our home. A year ago when Matt was being evaluated for occupational therapy services, due to his lack of vision, he was unable to dress himself. He could not even put his socks on. My husband and I made it a goal to help him become a bit more independent by trying to teach him to put his own socks on. When I get him dressed, I have been allowing him to put something on himself. He usually likes to put on his own underpants. Today for the first time. I laid his clothes out on my bed and I said "Guess what Matteo? today you get to dress all by yourself." His immediate response was "I don't think I can do that mama" and I replied "I think you can give it a try." At first he resisted by playing, jumping on the bed, rolling on the floor. I then offered him a reward if he gave it a try. It only took him about ten minutes but he did it. He completely dressed himself without my assistance.
I was so happy and so proud for all of our hard, yet rewarding work. Sometimes it is the small things.
